Ahhh... Men

Post by crbrazil » Tue Oct 12, 2010 1:46 am

Staring out the window of our tour bus
And it's just the horny driver and us.
We sit and trade wit and smoke and we cuss,
Talking about our friendly border drug bust.
And I know the future's cloudy and grey.
Record like mine, give up or go gay.
You're looking down at me with blue and black eyes,
Pissing down a storm from purple night skies.

And I know the concept's muddy and trite
That all that is large and all that is slight
Is flowing in the stream of holy floodlights.
At writing holy books, Lord knows we bite
But if this is your will and my testament,
I will bow to no belief that they bent.
Still I'm just a sperm begat from your love,
Basking in the bread, the blood of your dove.

Can I lie with you in your grave?

There's a crack in the edge of the end of the world
Where I will sit with my love in its fluorescent swirl.
Eat us up, break it down to the tiniest cell
In our room with a view and a window to hell
Where those who buried bodies in their barrels of fun
Will be marched through museums that displayed what they've done.
They'll be shot up through the sky by a cannon of sin
Where we'll reluctantly let them in.
So can I lie in your grave?

Ok so just throwing around ideas. I think the first part is him thinking about religion and how it has affected him. In the past he has fought god and gone against him "Looking down on me with blue and black eyes." And then the second part "Can I lie with you in your grave" is kind of a continuation to cemetary where he is asking to go stay in the same place when he dies as Sherri, or Jesus? Idk yet.

Okay, so, this song is addressed to God. Not Jesus. Note that Max never really sings to Jesus, even though he obviously thinks highly of him. Max is Jewish, so was Jesus. Anyway, I'm not gonna do a line-by-line here, but I'll give you the gist of verse two:
And I know the concept's muddy and trite
That all that is large and all that is slight
Is flowing in the stream of holy floodlights.
Max is admitting that having a belief in God is "muddy and trite," that is, it's not something that's scientifically verifiable, concrete, or even very easy to understand. He's saying here, "I know it stretches credibility to believe in God's plan and that he's watching us."
At writing holy books, Lord knows we bite
And all those ridiculous chunks of the Bible and the Koran, etc., don't really help the situation out much. For example, I don't know if anyone on here is Jewish... but ever try to read through Leviticus? Or Rashi's commentary to it? I have. And let's just say there should be a sleepy emoticon...
But if this is your will and my testament,
I will bow to no belief that they bent.
But I do believe in God, actually, all that aside. I'm a spiritual person. But I'm not going to subscribe to any of the twisted versions of spirituality men put out there. (Reminds me of in Angels & Demons, when Ewan McGregor asks, "Do you believe in God?," to which Tom Hanks answers some mumbly sort of thing, and he rephrases the question: "I didn't ask if you believe what men say about God. I asked if you believe in God.")
Still I'm just a sperm begat from your love,
Basking in the bread, the blood of your dove. ...
Can I lie with you in your grave?
I'm Yours and I want to be with You. "Lie in your grave" because people say "God is dead." Well, if God is dead, can I lie in his grave. "Bread/blood/dove" seems kindof Christian... did he convert at some point? Sherri is vaguely Christian, no?
Love, it will not betray you, dismay or enslave you.
It will set you free. Be more like the man you were made to be.
There is a design, an alignment, a cry of my heart to see
the beauty of love as it was meant to be.

transylvanian, yeah he converted in between IDOTG and the new CD. Sherri comes from a very Christian family as well and I have heard that is one of the qualities Max really admired in Sherri-- her faith in God.

Ah, I was unaware of that, so that makes those lyrics all that much more clear.
EDIT: Did he tell you that? Or did he post it or something?

He still considered himself Jewish ethnically but his religion is Christian.
He did not personally tell me, but definitely verified.
