Property

Don't you go leaving, baby I'll find you,
Tell all your secrets, no one will want you.
It's for your own good, I know what's best for you,
If you won't sleep with me, there'll be no rest for you.

Until the day you're broke, until you drop and choke,
I'll be the man, this much I know.
Until the empire falls, until you think it all.

You gave your love to me and now you are my property,
You sold your soul, you can't retrieve the love I stole.
From you, it's true, deny with everything you do
You're my property, you're my property.

Sell you in to bondage. Baby I own you,
You'll entertain all my friends.
Dressed in the latest trendy frocks,
You'll get a tattoo, that I am your patriarch.
It's your ambition, soon you will fear the dark
(Because I lurk in your bed)

Until the day you see, that you mean nothing to me,
Until the day i find, someone to fall in line.
Without a single sin, with adding opinion.

You gave your love to me and now you are my property,
You sold your soul, you can't retrieve the love I stole.
From you, it's true, deny with everything you do
You're my property, you're my property.

(Spoken)

Baby, I know you got all those crazy, lofty goals. Going to art school and following your dreams and what not, bla, bla, bla. Just throw it to the side, you know I can support us all on my own and, worse case, I'll just have to sell some drugs to my little brothers friends. If you do have to sell your body, once or twice or seven times. It'll be worth it, and trust me, one day this'll all be a distant, distant dream. (Dream, dream)

Until the earth's removed, or daddy don't approve,
Whatever happens first, depending on my mood.

You gave your love to me and now you are my property,
You sold your soul, you can't retrieve the love I stole.
From you, it's true, deny with everything you do
You're my property, you're my property.

You're my property, hahahahahahahaha.

I LOVE this song. I guess its just about all the fucked up emotions that go in to a relationship at the start of it. Also, anything that plays with the idea of gender roles is cool. Plus, this song just ROCKS.

isnt it about being in a relationship where the boyfriend has complete control?
I miss you, girl. You're all that makes me true.

One thing to clear up with this song is that Max is writing from the perspective of him being more of the victim here. A lot of people were pissed off at first with these lyrics and basically said he is a horrible person for doing all of this stuff. Max said somewhere that he wrote this because he has been in a relationship where the other person treated him in this way, and he knew of others who had been in similar situations. Being in a relationship like this can really take a toll on everyone involved.

I would see it as being in an abusive relationship to an extent.
Not physically abusive but emotionally abusive.
Speaking from personal experience, abusive people tend to look at their significant other as property - they make them feel like no one else would accept them so they'll be attached to you.
Of course, being looked at as property leads to horrid treatment.

This song makes me think of Roy and Pam from the office... a LOT.
I believe max said once that this song, as far as the narrative of the Self-Titled album goes, is identifying the villain. I've always taken this whole album has one big, focused, social critique. It's always seemed to me that the villain displayed in this song was one of the most hated by Max. Might even relate back to the skinny mean man we've heard about before? =o

I think this song is actually just an exaggeration of the way he now feels. Like when you start dating someone, you start to feel more possessive, that the person belongs to you. You feel like the person shouldnt go out and dp certain things or talk to certain people. And EVERYONE feels this way at some point to some extent, especially when a relationship is just starting to become very serious.

Makes me think of the movie Waitress starring Kerri Russell and Nathan Fillian. A lot.
Love, it will not betray you, dismay or enslave you.
It will set you free. Be more like the man you were made to be.
There is a design, an alignment, a cry of my heart to see
the beauty of love as it was meant to be.
