Less Cute

Post by crbrazil » Tue Oct 12, 2010 2:23 am

Never thought that I could feel such a slap in the face
Since my semester in New York where I drank it away
Social strategies are taught to bohemian crowds
And my love was like a food stamp handing it out
Though I fell in love with you, all fey and grizzled and mature
You left me naked, pining, whining on you bathroom floor
If it makes you jealous tell us just which boy we should adore
And we talk about myself so I don't mind that he's a bore

He's like a less cute version of you
But he'll have to do
He's like a Wal-Mart version of you
But he'll have to do
He'll have to do

Mountain man, brag about your band to me
You got me hot with all those snide remarks about my poetry
But he gobbles up every single line about sars
And how they scar my slightly chubby arms like brightly light cigars

So now, he's next to me
And I can feel you in my heart
You're everything
You're everything he'll never be
It's misery, and more specifically
I miss that day you spit on me

He's like a less cute version of you
But he'll have to do
He's like a Wal-Mart version of you
But he'll have to do
He'll have to do
He's like a less cute version of you
But he'll have to do
He's like a Wal-Mart version of you
But he'll have to do
He'll have to do

He has no inkling of your status or mind
He's just the glow that I splatter to bind
You and I like siamese twins
So let the sick sad game begin

Now, you're here again
And he will wonder where I've been
I'm giving in
But in my own opinion
That's how to be
Though I can hear him singing
All this envy's killing me

He's like a less cute version of you
But he'll have to do
He's like a Wal-Mart version of you
But he'll have to do
He'll have to do
He's like a less cute version of you
But he'll have to do
He's like a Wal-Mart version of you
But he'll have to do
He'll have to do

This song always kind of confuses me. Only because I cant tell if the whole song is from a girl's perspective, or if its a mix of two perspectives.

Entirely one girl's perspective, I've always felt.

Always took it as a critique of a social/interpersonal situation that happens all too often. The story the song is telling is rather straight forward... Girl loves guy A, guy B treats like an ass, she tries to get his affections by making him jealous via guy B, who is actually a nice guy, but will never live up to guy A in her eyes.

How the story is told is rather believable, I've kind of been in a few situations like it myself, but the end result with a lose-lose-lose is where the critique is most obvious, i.e. "being a part of this situation is dumb and gets no one anywhere."

All three characters are at fault, here.
Guy A is an asshole who is content on being kind of a scummy person and leading the girl on and treating her like crap still, using her it seems, as a pawn in his sick, sad game.
The girl is a manipulative and naive bitch who is both thinking only about herself, and not actually thinking at all at the same time. She's the willing participant in guy A's game, yet there really is no good reason for wanting to be. Both her and guy A aren't getting much fulfillment out of life... and I don't mean morally or socially, I mean in terms of honest, real, candid human interaction.
Buy B might get some sympathy... he probably is a bit more of a sincere person. But the stupid games that the stupid Guy A and Girl play drag him into this whole situation... preying on his nativity and such. It's a damn cycle in which this guy gets hurt the most, not quite as jaded as everyone else yet, but after which he might very well put himself in the same situation as the girl... chasing after her by making her jealous using another girl... or turning into a guy that is a jerk in general much like Guy A.

So some of that might be a bit more of my experience bleeding though, but the basic narrative behind it makes a lot of sense to me. Also, the lyrics have a lot of symbolism and subtext and cleverness that I don't feel like typing on about now, but they all seem to have a purpose for the narrative that I explained.

Any different thoughts?

lol I was pretty sure this was from Max's perspective.
He did a semester in New York, and he has lyrics about stars and scars.
And he once posted, "I am fully gay."

Your move guys
Love, it will not betray you, dismay or enslave you.
It will set you free. Be more like the man you were made to be.
There is a design, an alignment, a cry of my heart to see
the beauty of love as it was meant to be.

that "i'm fully gay" thing was a statement. go read it, it's in the archives. i'm not angrily replying, he just went on to say that it was bull shit for it to matter what his preference was or anything like that. it's a good little thing...go read it
