Thoughts On a Liberal Education

Post by Mailliw » Thu Oct 14, 2010 1:34 pm

i've been waiting for years for this to end
but now you're gone and i don't know where i am
put my head in the books i burned for you
they'll revive me, that's what they'll do

i'll silence you with sex and drugs and education
murder you in mind and heart for all you put me through
this is my last song for you
i will not be your number two

and i ate poison growth with my new friends
and it was awkward to watch the colors blend
as i laid on the ground and drooled and sighed
i thought of you love, and how hard i tried

to silence you with sex and drugs and education
murder you in mind and heart for all you put me through
this is my last song for you
i will not be your number two

silence you with sex and drugs and education
murder you in mind and heart for all you put me through
this is my last song for you
this is my last song for you
this is my last song for you
baby i won't be your number two

Curious what people think of this song.

To a high school girlfriend: "I broke it off cos I moved, but now I miss you. It wasn't perfect, but I miss you. So I'm going to throw myself into studying, new girls, and drugs to forget about you, be that for better or worse." (in Max's case, from LA to Sarah Lawrence in NY... big move)

A "liberal education," to clarify, isn't liberal in the political sense, i.e. Democrat, but broad-based, liberal in its approach. You don't go get an engineering degree, you study philosophy, religious studies, literature, etc. And "poison growth" = shrooms
Love, it will not betray you, dismay or enslave you.
It will set you free. Be more like the man you were made to be.
There is a design, an alignment, a cry of my heart to see
the beauty of love as it was meant to be.

i think for the most part it's saying that he realizes now how shitty it really was being in this relationship. he's hurt but better off out of it. he can do all the stuff she was holding him back from. he's free to be the personthe person he was supposed to...not the mold she was making him fit. my favorite thing is how it's like it's her last song and it's a total like fuck you and you're little dog too thing, i'm so much better without you. great song, acoustic version is my personal favorite (gtfu version i mean)
was i born to sink into this couch

I agree to an extent, brazil. I always felt there was a lot more spite behind the words. This always felt like a song marking the beginning of long, dark, downward spiral. The drug references really enforced that point of view for me, not to mention he never says "I'm over you," or "I'm done with you," it's always I'll silence you. Basically cover up any trace of her... but she's still there underneath of all the bad habits and subconscious lies. Not to mention he seems to be putting the blame for the new unhealthy life on her. The start of a dark age...
