Chia-Like, I Shall Grow

Post by Norgan » Wed Oct 13, 2010 1:54 am

I've watched you all succeed with the highest marks in greed
From my cave, where you're displayed like photographs that bleed
And my teeth grind names into their ivory membranes
I am hate everlasting with each sickly spell I'm casting

I discard all feelings
The stars scar my ceiling
Sun, I won't spare you
Moon, I won't spare you

And my pain is mine. It's become my friend with time
Chia-like, it grows. Watch it fester for my foes
One day, I'm gonna get up and get right back into the city with my flamethrower mouth
You bet your life it won't be pretty

I discard all my feelings
As the stars still scar my ceiling
I won't spare you. Whoa I, I won't spare you

Photograph, photograph, photograph
Why'd you have to go and take a picture of a life like that?
You aren't new enough. I give up, I give up, I give up on you

Look at you, look at you, look at you
Pretty boy floating face down in a pond of glue
You aren't new enough. We give up, we give up, we give up on all those like you

I discard all feelings
The stars scar my ceiling
I won't spare you. Whoa I, I won't spare you

(Won't spare you, won't spare you, won't spare you, I won't spare you)
I shall grow and grow...
I'll grow.

My friend once told me she felt this song had to do with Beowolf. She's not some dumb chick, either, so there's some legitimate reasons to consider it.

Personally, I don't get that vibe at all... although, I can kind of feel a similarity between Beowolf and this song in terms of tone and emotion... the violent imagery helps too.

I remember Max answered a question about this song on his twitter.
he said something along the lines of
"Feeling like an alien and being mad about it"
I miss you, girl. You're all that makes me true.

now the question is does he mean an illegal immigrant? hahaha
Self-inflicted or not, I find myself on the farthest star, foreign to everything like I woke up with a German tongue.

I believe this song was about the moments in Max's life when he was in the hospital because of drugs, and he felt trapped and alienated.
For those non-conformists, you conformed the moment you decided that you didn't wish to conform. By not conforming you've conformed.
Nice job kids.

SA came and played at my school after In Defense... came out. Before they played this song, he said it was about how he did poorly in college and how he was going to succeed regardless of that. I thought it was pretty cool that he told that to the college crowd, kind of like a "F*uck you" to the establishment of universities.

Well that definitely fits with the first line. Rather illuminating tip, there. This. Changes. Everything.

Yeah it does fit the whole song! I meant that this meaning was pretty much directly referenced with the first line "...highest marks..." talking about the whole school setup kind of thing.

Seriously, I've never thought about the whole song this way. It's like a way louder, angrier, more mature High School Low. I love it!

"The highest marks in greed," yeah. Similar to "Signal the Riflemen" in that it puts down the emptiness of the university experience.
I love education, but I hate paying out the ass to sit in class and be bored to death by the "thoughts" of my brainless, frat-boy peers... needless to say, had a love/hate with my own years in school.

Both songs remind me of this scene:

EDIT: But there is definitely Beowulf imagery there. The verses could be from Grendel's persperctive (he being the monster whom Beowulf, the hero, must slay). If you haven't read it, do it, it's brilliant, it's the first major work in English, and it's short. Get the Seamus Heaney translation. "Walk Through Hell" is more Beowulf-y though
Love, it will not betray you, dismay or enslave you.
It will set you free. Be more like the man you were made to be.
There is a design, an alignment, a cry of my heart to see
the beauty of love as it was meant to be.
